Today, we lost one of Alaska's greatest men, Governor Jay Hammond. He was the finest leader Alaska ever produced that I personally met. He was a man who loved the land and the Alaskan way of life yet recognized the need for development and jobs. Unlike some strident ideologues in power today, Hammond could empathize with both sides of an issue. He was a Republican and a conservationist, someone who always put Alaska's interests first.
Most of all, Governor Hammond was kind and modest. He didn't let his status go to his head. When Yael and I launched our guidebook, he generously agreed to spend an hour on the phone being interviewed. When Richard Goldman visited Homer after giving us a large gift, Hammond flew there in his own plane to thank him. Last month, at a dinner in Seward, he graciously hoisted Ari in his aging arms for a photo. Just a regular guy--who happened to be incredibly articulate and care deeply for Alaska.
Governor Hammond, We'll miss you! When Ari grows up, I hope our leaders will be as fair and down-to-earth as you. You were truly a product of Alaska.
We're all grieving. He was a wonderful man.
