One summer, I hiked a 50-mile section of the Iditarod Trail in the wilderness about 125 miles from Anchorage. I was alone for a week. On occassion, I would see worn booties which had fallen off the dogs. It reassured me I was on the right trail. (In open valleys in summer, it's sometimes hard to know whether you're on the right trail or not because there are no markings. In the woods, it's easy, because trees are cut and blazed.)
